The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is a young adult novel set in a dystopian future where everyone's emotions and diversity have been removed. Everyone is the same and everything is strictly regulated. At the age of 13 each child is given the job that he or she will pursue throughout their adult lives. The protagonist receives the mysterious job called, The Receiver. He is chosen to receive all of the cultural knowledge to be passed down from The Giver. This story revolves around the knowledge that the protagonist gains from The Giver and how it propels him to rebel against a society whose goal of peace at any cost backfires.
