With each sucessive chapter Jonas becomes more and more discontent with how restricted and lackluster their lives really are. He can see all of the beauty and wonder of the world that has been taken from the people in the name of keeping the peace.
Jonas also experiences his first taste of 'pain'. After having been given a memory of neglect and starvation, Jonas asks The Giver why he has to keep these memories. The Giver explains that those memories give wisdom. Jonas begins to question the practice of 'releasing'. He begins to worry about Gabriel. One night when Gabriel is crying, Jonas attempts to soothe him by giving him a peaceful memory. To his surprise Gabriel is able to accept it, and quiets down. His ability to be a Giver so early, and Gabriel to be a receiver frightens him.
