Why did Clemantine have trouble identifying with the "African American" experience?

The white people Clemantine knew were kind and caring. They took her in, and the home where she lived in Kenilworth was spacious and beautiful. This caused her to feel privileged. Clemantine notes that in either place, she continues to play a part and doesn't feel as if she can be herself.
