Who is Mariette from the book, The Girl Who Smiled Beads?

Mariette is Claire and Rob's first child. She was born towards the start of the Rwandan conflict. As soon as Clemantine saw her, she fell in love, and devoted herself to Mariette's care and protection. While Claire was searching for jobs or working, Clemantine watched over Mariette. She became so protective of her niece, she would not let others touch her, and even resented the way Claire cared for her.
