Like a dream, Strindberg's play does not follow a straight line of cause-and-effect actions. Time is cryptic and can even be stopped like the hands of a clock. His characters act in strange, unpredictable ways. Most important of all, the play projects the feelings and attitudes of its author through the words and actions of his characters. As a style, expressionism is meant to convey the inner workings of the artist's mind. Strindberg's innermost is on display.
