As a young woman, Puri has lots of questions, and her inquisitive nature is not seen as a positive trait by her superiors. Puri begins to see things at the maternity clinic and the orphanage that make her doubt that the government and other officials are doing what is right for the children, and especially for their families. She soon discovers that she was also adopted and was taken from her family because of their political leanings. As Puri faces the difficult truths, she knows that she should implicitly trust her country and the government, “But a quiet part of her” (371) has doubts.

Those doubts are founded because there are many more Spaniards who have paid the ultimate price as they fought against a fascist government's strict rules and policies. However, their sacrifices were unable to keep those people out of power. During Spain's civil war, which ended in 1939, anyone opposed to the government found themselves jailed, forced into labor, tortured, and executed. Puri's parents were punished by losing their daughter to this corrupt government. Puri's adoptive aunt and uncle were murdered and imprisoned. Those who fought against the fascists felt the pull of their country and answered the call by fighting to keep the democratic government in place, but they lost that battle.
