The Floating World
How is Cora described in the novel, The Floating World?
.
.
Cora is described as kindhearted, impressionable, and empathetic. She is easily overwhelmed by tragedy. Her family views her as somewhat passive and a “victim,” though this perspective shifts over the course of the novel. Cora displays remarkable self-possession and bravery in navigating the post-Katrina floodwaters to save stranded survivors. She deflects her coworker, Troy’s, attempts to “father” her and initiates a romantic relationship with him in the midst of the storm. Cora also readily adopts an authoritative caregiving role with Reyna’s two orphaned sons (though she does, at first, follow Tyrone’s instruction that she stay behind after the hurricane).
