Why does the driver suggest that Ven stays away from Mr. Whiting?

Passing the posh looking White Fern Inn, Ven asks if it is possible that they stay overnight there. The driver tells him firstly it is far too expensive and secondly the owner Mr. Whiting is an evil man who raises killer dogs. The driver says if he were Ven, he would stay well clear of such a person.
