Why does Char try to help Ven in this section?

Char tries to help Ven by claiming the ring was found under his bed and not Ven's, meaning he should also be arrested. But as he explains to Ven, he is under strict orders from Captain Oliver to protect Ven no matter what and will follow those orders to his death.
