Who is Char from The Floating Island and what is their importance?

Char is the assistant chef on the Serelinda. He is an orphan, and he refuses to allow anyone to feel sorry for him because of his circumstances. The Captain tasks Char with looking out for Ven, and he takes his responsibility seriously. He looks out for him on the ship, teaches him what he needs to know about being a sailor, and h even sneaks onto the rowboat headed to Floating Island. Char and Ven become close friends, but when the ship lands, Ven expects him to go on his way. Char, however, sticks close and continues to be his friend.
