When Mr. Whiting sees two people heading to the Crossroad Inn, he stops to talk to them. A middle-aged couple, he tells them, he is carrying a murderous Nain in the back of the wagon who was a worker at the Crossroad Inn - quite typical, he says of the people that stay there. He continues by saying that it probably attracts lowlife because they are the only people that would stay at place that was haunted. He suggests that they stay at his inn instead.
