The Flame Alphabet
What is the symbolism of the "Jew Hole" in the novel, The Flame Alphabet?
.
.
"The Jew hole" - the name that Samuel gives the hole in the ground through which the teachings of his religious leader are passed along orange cable - represents Samuel's connection to his faith. It is, literally, an opening to what he believes to be true, what he believes to be his pathway to a faithful life, his pathway to salvation. This idea is supported by ways in which the image of the hole is developed later in the narrative - specifically, when Samuel escapes his confinement at Forsythe through "the Jew hole" there (i.e. the whole opens onto a pathway of salvation), follows a series of tunnels to, and through, other "Jew holes" (i.e. false faiths), until he finds his way back to his own "Jew hole" (i.e. his sense of self, his sense of righteousness in his faith).
