What metaphors are used in The First Seven Years by Bernard Malamud?

Early in the story, Malamud personifies (the attribution of human traits to inanimate objects) snow as "nearsighted". Obviously, this does not mean that the snow itself is nearsighted, but rather, that the falling snow makes it hard for a person to see very far. The term "nearsighted" makes a perfect metaphor for Feld himself, foreshadowing his dominant characteristic: he is not far-sighted.
