Why did jesmyn ward decided to include these poems? Why poetry and non fiction even though she was a writer of both non- fiction and fiction?

Fiction is often more revealing of truth than non-fiction. Fiction can give a similar non-fiction story greater depth of meaning. I don't know the author's reasons for choosing the essays and poems.
