How would you describe the author's sense of anger in the beginning of "Down at the Cross"?

In terms of his relationship with Christianity, the author's anger here is tinged more with sadness and a sense of loss than it is at other times. There is almost the sense that he continues to carry with him, in spite of all his other experiences, a lingering sense of church-inspired safety, hope and joy.
