How does the author perceive the expression of pain and suffering of blacks through Christianity?

Negro slaves experienced suffering as the result of the pain inflicted upon them by whites, so why shouldn't they express their hope in similar, white defined terms? However the author suggests throughout the book that, in order to experience true freedom, Negroes must move beyond a culture of reaction, and to a culture of creation.
