In the later years of the Civil Rights Movement, which began in earnest a few years after this book was published the rainbow was adopted by the Movement's leaders as a symbol of the union for which they were striving. In the same way as the varied colors of the rainbow harmonize and blend into each other to create a beautiful whole, the Movement hoped that all the varied colors of the peoples of America could also blend to create beauty.
