Antonia has rituals she performs that make her mind feel clear and her body uncomplicated. The evening before she beings high school, she spends 10 minutes sharpening three pencils to the same length. She slips them into their own pocket in her knapsack, presses flat the pages in her new notebook, and makes sure the straps of her knapsack are tightened to match one another. She has also organized all of her dresses by color, stacked her books by size, and cut two loaves of bread into perfectly even slices.
