Eärendel is the son of Tuor and Idril and the first child born in the union of a man and an Eldar. While Eärendel himself does not have as big of a role in the Fall of Gondolin, this novel acts as an origin story for him, as he becomes a much more important character in Tolkien's other novels. Eärendel is shown to be an intelligent child with the fierce personality of both his parents as shown when he bites Meglin long enough to allow Tuor to throw Meglin out of the window and save both Eärendel and his mother. Eärendel also develops a deep love for Ulmo and the sea once the survivors of Gondolin settle near the Sirion River.
