Meglin represents the dangers of jealousy. While his background is not completely clear, the reader does know that Meglin was born in a loveless and forced marriage. He lived like a prince for years, but becomes jealous of Tuor the moment he enters Gondolin. However, Meglin allows his jealousy to control him, and the longer he gives into his envy, the less human he becomes. By the end, he has lost all ability to feel compassion for others and is killed by Tuor. However, that does not prevent Gondolin’s fall, as Meglin has already brought evil to the city through his jealousy.
