The author uses eloquent language, long sentences and sweepingly romantic landscape descriptions that are haunted by a seemingly higher power which is then juxtaposed with the dirty and cramped conditions of London. While the characters are in Essex, attention to detail is given to the outdoor environments and a lot of time is spent describing the forest setting, the weather and the earth and the tone of the descriptions is calm and fluid. When the serpent and mythical areas are described such as World's End and Leviathan, the language and word choice is ethereal and takes on a dream like quality to pinpoint the non-earthly nature of these things. In a similar manner, when Stella's transformation occurs and the further she sinks into her blue obsession, the more obscure and languid the language becomes suggesting a slip from reality.
