Gandhi heard of violence in Noakhali in the province of Bengal and traveled there to intercede. He vowed not to leave the province until there was peace. Before leaving for Noakhali, word came that the neighboring province of Bihar had broken out into violence. Thousands of Moslems were massacred. Gandhi put the blame at the feet of the Bihar Hindus. Finally violence decreased and Gandhi traveled to the remote area of Noakhali.
