What positive action took place while Gandhi fasted?

Gandhi was fasting to save the soul of India. The leaders of the untouchables or Harijans immediately met with Hindu leaders. A compromise was proposed wherein the Harijans would be able to hold primaries to select Harijan candidates. The next day, Hindu officials presented the plan to Gandhi who was already weak from fasting.
