The country was jubilant that Gandhi lived and that conditions were improved for the Harijans. Temples heretofore closed to untouchables were opening their doors to them. Holy men were seen openly dining with Harijans. The pact represented a religious reformation and a psychological revolution. Gandhi was attaining his goal--he was changing the heart of India.
