What happened on August 15, 1947?

India won its independence on August 15, 1947. Gandhi refused to attend the official celebration. He was saddened by the continuing violence spurred on by the creation of Pakistan. Gandhi continued his work of helping the poor, reigning in violence and practicing much self-introspection.
