What happened initially when Gandhi got word to England about the treatment of Indians in South Africa?

In 1909, Gandhi got word to England about the treatment of the Indians in South Africa. He won the support of many of the liberals of the country. The government again promised to lift an unfair tax for Indians who wanted to stay in South Africa after their indentured term has expired.
