The author of the book, Louis Fischer, visited Gandhi in his ashram and stayed for four days. He was amazed at Gandhi's fitness. His skin seemed younger than his 73 years. His legs were strong and his chest was muscular. His age was seen in his face, a face Fischer describes as ugly in repose. His eyes were soft and kind but his wide nose almost covered his upper lip. He had false teeth but only wears them to eat.
