Who is Arvid from The Emigrants: A Novel and what is their importance?

Arvid, also known as the Bull of Nybacken, is a farm hand. He is described as a strong man, with reddish skin and old frostbites that would bleed in cold weather. Arvid's is a shy, uneducated man with slow speech. His interest in America leads him to join Robert on the journey.
