How do Marcus and Esca evade their pursuers in Chapter 17?

Marcus and Esca flee from their pursuers on their ponies at a breakneck pace to a river. There, they release the ponies in the hopes that will make the tribesmen suspect they drowned. They hide in the river until the tribesmen leave.
