Who is Jean's Father from The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and what is their importance?

Jean sees his father for the last time just before his stroke. He spends the night at his father's apartment (his father is 93), gives him a shave, and checks out all of the old memorabilia his father keeps on display. After Jean's stroke, his father sends him an old photo from when he was eleven.
