Reyna Grande’s memoir is written in the first person. She is therefore the subject and author of this non-fiction book. She utilizes this first-person narrative style throughout the entire book, never changing her voice. From when she is a child until she is an adult, she carries the reader through her story. Even when she is providing statistical or historical information, she maintains the personal narrative voice, rather than reverting to an impartial academic voice. Through her personal story, the author captures an important period of Mexican-American history that is told as a microcosm of a greater situation happening around her to countless other families.
