Karen Barad is a nonbinary American scientist and writer whose work on particle physics and on the sociology of physics, including what they call “the tendency toward scientific reductionism,” drives a lot of Prescod-Weinstein’s writing (23). She calls on her readers, including Prescod-Weinstein, to think about how things like perceptions of gender and one’s appointed place affect how scientific data is interpreted. They assert that quantum mechanics teaches us that the universe cannot be broken down into easily understandable parts and categorized, and so scientists should be able to accept that people cannot be either.
