Kenneth Hatcher, as seen through his son Tony's eyes, is often the remote father. His marriage to an American woman ends because of his primary commitment to his career as a prosecuting attorney, and his family commitment to his son that leads him to keep trying to connect with the boy: "We had one trip to the Bronx Zoo, one trip on the Staten Island ferry and then to the Statue of Liberty, one baseball game in Yankee Stadium, one hike in the woods in some mountains upstate . . . I guess if I'd come back from any of that and said, Wow that was fun, Dad, let's do it again, we would've done it over . . . ."
