Why does Greg get sent back to the camper while on the hike in the national forest?

Greg remembers that bears are scared away by loud noises, so he takes pots and pans from the camper and bangs on them during the hike, to keep the bears away. This quickly annoys the whole family, and he is sent back to the camper to put the pots away.
