What does the family do to not get noticed, as they attempt to leave the campground?

As to not be noticed, the family rolls the camper towards the stream, rather than being caught starting their engine. As the camper picks up speed, they all jump in. When they are far enough away to not be noticed, they start the engine but keep the lights off, which makes it difficult to find the shallow part of the stream.
