What is the theme in The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy?

Death is a major theme in this book. Ivan knows all too well that death is always a possibility and even a probability in a Russian Gulag. Tolstoy was plagued for most of his life with a fear of death. We see this ever present fear in the through the character of Ivan Ilych.
