Who is Carlos from The Dead and the Gone and what is their importance?

Carlos is the oldest of the Morales children. Carlos is away at the time of the disaster, serving in the military. He is a hero to his siblings, but they only hear from once, at the beginning of the story when his unit is being deployed.
