How does the author use foreshadowing in The Day of the Triffids?

In Chapter One, William's encounter with the barman at the end of the chapter, illustrates a stark and very telling portrayal of human desperation, and the speed with which people can fall into it. This foreshadows several similar incidents later in the narrative.
