In Chapter 3, what happened when Ruby touched Samantha?

Ruby was upset because Samantha had taken a punishment for her. Ruby wanted to explain to Samantha why she did not defend herself or Samantha. Ruby touched Samantha, and a flash of Samantha's memories filled Ruby's brain. Then Samantha's facial expressions were replaced with a blank look. Samantha no longer remembered Ruby, and she asked her what her name was.
