The novel uses simple English to convey the base plotline, but also uses a vast amount of German language to convey the country of origin within the story. German phrases and cities are commonly used, and the novel successfully translates such usage seamlessly into the storyline. This gives the novel a feeling of authenticity without the common problem of forced translation. Language becomes a vital component to the storyline, as the characters struggle in Belarus to understand one another. Pantomimes and other gestures assist the characters in their efforts to convey meaning to one another.
