The black man somehow comes back from the grave and causes etchings on the windows of the gas station to show the man's crimes, tormenting him so much he confesses. However, no else ever sees the etchings; therefore, the reader wonders if the etchings were ever really there or if they were a figment of the white tormentor's own guilty conscience.
