What is the cryptex and how is it discovered?

The cryptex is a coded cylinder that is found within the rosewood box that came out of the safety deposit box. The brass dials have to be aligned properly in order to open it. If an attempt is made to force the cryptex open it will self-destruct. Sophie has seen them before, as her grandfather introduced her to them years ago.
