In Act One, the exposition informs us of supernatural occurrences that are effecting the community, as well as the steps that are being taken to decipher the causes. As an audience, we know that Betty Parris and sick and unresponsive. We also know that Betty was involved in some questionable activities in the woods, as her father witnessed those activities first hand. That Parris is keeping what he saw a secret allows us to infer that the outcome will become bigger than the initial act that caused it.
