Mr. Parham chooses eight of the traps and a bottle of lure. They go home and boil the traps in a washtub on the stove, then coat them with beeswax. Later Billy and his father go in search of the wolf. Billy and his father remain on their horses as they search for the wolf, careful not to walk around on the ground where they plan to set traps. When Billy's father finds a likely spot for a trap, he puts down a calfskin to stand on and uses deer hide gloves when he touches the trap. The trap set is made carefully and when he finishes, it looks "like nothing at all." Billy sets the next set trap.
