At the start of the story, Chester lives in a stump that borders on a meadow, and he has a soft spot for certain foods. That said, and picnickers settle in the meadow near his home for an afternoon picnic, he makes his way into their picnic basket and enjoys a variety of the foods before he getting tired and dozing off. Later, Chester wakes up because one of the picnickers has put a leftover sandwich down on top of him, and he cannot move. At first he doesn’t panic, but when the basket is taken from a car to a train, he begins to worry. He finally frees himself when the train pulls into the Times Square shuttle station.
