In 1950, Tillich delivered the prestigious Terry Lectures at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, the outcome of which is the current book. The Terry Lectures were established in 1905 and are made possible by a financial gift from Dwight H. Terry. Their purpose is to broadly and publicly engage scholars who consider religion from a humanist or humanitarian point of view, often in dialogue with science and modern philosophy. Once Tillich gave these lectures, his work gained a wider readership from a broader, more popular audience.
