Why is it so important for the union to win the piece of the Mississippi river between Baton Rouge in Vicksburg from the Confederates

The Union Army needed to open up this area in order to navigate the Mississippi River with gunboats. Control of the Mississippi River also provided a critical supply line, and a way to cut off outside trade to the Confederacy.
