Dantes revenge against Caderousse is long in coming.... it is also caused by a reaction to something that Caderousse has done. Dantes really doesn't need to lend a hand. Toward the end of the novel, Caderousse steals from Monte Cristo's house. Monte Cristo, in disguise as the Abbé Busoni, catches him red-handed and subsequently allows him to go. Dantes know that once he lets Caderousse leave.... he will immediately be killed by Benedetto, his accomplice.
