Chip Lambert is the son of Enid and Alfred. He lives in New York City where he works as a writer and proofreader. He had been dismissed from an academic position at a Connecticut college for his sexual behavior with a student. He is now having financial difficulties and has borrowed more than twenty thousand dollars from his sister, Denise. Chip thought it was possible to be successful without earning a lot of money. He had always been successful in everything he did until his problems at the college. Denise suggests he contact her friend Julia Vrais if he is interested in writing. He does and becomes romantically involved with her, even though she is married.
