The author uses last name to symbolize his character's roles in the story. Ozzie's last name is "Freedman," which is symbolic of his quest for religious freedom. Rabbi "Binder," is a source of retraint.... he binds Ozzie's mind and offsets his questions. He wants to bind Ozzie to formal Jewish doctrine.
